Microsoft has begun deploying the October 10, 2010, Windows 10 update – also known as Windows 10 1809 – on Oct. 2. Throughout the development process of this update, Microsoft executives have communicated on new features primarily aimed at the general public. But there are also a number of new features in the 1809 update that might be of interest to IT professionals.
Microsoft published a blog post earlier this week on these new features available to the computer pros in this release. In this paper, the authors note that the 1809 version will be deployed worldwide via the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) "in the coming weeks". It will also be sent to Microsoft partners via the Microsoft Action Pack Subscriptions (MAPS) via the Microsoft Partner Network on October 5th. Other MAPS subscribers will receive it on October 22nd.
There will also be a Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) version of Windows 10 Enterprise Update, known as Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019. This is the third version of Windows 10 LTSC since Microsoft started roll out regular updates to Windows 10 features. LTSC updates get security patches but not feature updates. Easily manage devices and deployments with Microsoft 365
Microsoft is working to make it easier to manage devices and deployments with Microsoft 365 (its Windows 10 software package, Office 365, and Enterprise Mobility + Security). That's why a number of new features for IT professionals in the 1809 release are available when used with Office 365 and EMS, Microsoft notes.
As expected, a number of the new features for IT pros in this release are related to security. Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection offers a number of new features, including custom detection, support for Windows Server 2019 integration, support for security service providers, and more.
Microsoft is providing a number of its threat intelligence services through a single console view with Microsoft Threat Protection in this new release. Microsoft officials also said they have reduced the overall attack surface with new features and controls in Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (especially in Windows Defender Exploit Guard). They have also improved Defender ATP's antivirus functionality using machine learning and AI models. New ways to log in without a password
Microsoft is also adding new ways to login without password for Windows 10 devices via FIDO2, Web Authentication and Microsoft Authenticator in this new release. And there is now support for the Windows Defender firewall for the Windows for Linux subsystem.
In terms of management, Microsoft continues to strengthen Windows Autopilot for automatic device provisioning by adding a new automatic deployment mode and an option for shared devices, kiosks, and digital signage. It also supports Hybrid Azure Active Directory (AAD). Assure Desktop App – a new service for Windows 10 Enterprise and Education users – will help accelerate application compatibility resolution for those migrating to Windows 10.
As Microsoft previously announced, the company is implementing a new update concept for monthly fixes that is smaller and more efficient, starting with the 1809 version. Microsoft is also reducing the size of download packages for x64 systems for those using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) or Configuration Manager. Stronger integration between Android and Windows phones
Again, as previously announced, from version 1809, all Windows 10 Enterprise and Education feature updates will be supported for 30 months.
Some of the newer mainstream features of the 1809 version will probably be of interest to IT professionals as well. For example the stronger integration between Android and Windows phones via the "Your Phone" application, improved wireless projection, full automatic support in the registry editor, faster connection to a PC Windows 10 shared, or the Web connection to Windows 10, and more.
The unified search feature of Microsoft Search announced last week to Ignite begins to deploy under Windows 10 from this new version as well. This new search separates Cortana from Search and allows users to get local search results, from their intranet and the web in a way common to Windows, Office 365 and Bing.
